Learning is activism!
I believe that community education is a really great way to jumpstart or strengthen activism. Truly understanding our country’s immigration system, its history, and the rights of those who us it allows people to gain deeper context for what is happening in the United States to non-citizens and map the systems of power that make massive injustices possible.
I enjoy teaching classes in all contexts to people of all ages and backgrounds. Maybe you want to plan a session for your community group to focus on immigration issues. Maybe you are a history teacher wanting to wake your students up to the realities of the system people face. Maybe you want to invite friends and neighbors over for food to discuss how to fight back against ICE. I try to cater programs to the needs of the folks who requesting.
These classes are not designed to simply give people a list of “things to do” to be an activist. They are an invitation to learn more and find things to be curious about and areas to explore. I also like to follow up with resources that people can use to continue to learn and explore and get involved.
Please remember when requesting a class that this is work. When possible honorariums are helpful or donations based attendance. It really depends on the context of the class and the community group involved!
Here are some classes I like to teach:
1) Immigration 101—This fundamentally answers the question… why don't people just do it the legal way? It generally takes about 90 minutes!
2) The Mechanics of Mass Deportation - This class is an update on the current moment of mass arrest, incarceration, and removal at the hands of the U.S. government and ICE. It’s meant to breakdown the process of what is happening and understand the government systems that make this possible. This takes between 90-120 minutes!
